Successful Installation of REDT's Storage System in collaboration with FP7 and the European Commission
€6 million, 36 months, 12 partners and 7 countries working together to improve the viability of solar power. REDT selected as the Energy Storage System of choice.
REDT has successfully installed a demonstration system in Evora, Portugal which has a 5kW rated power with 12 hours (60kWh) storage capacity. This will be connected to a Building-integrated PV installation at the agriculture and animal husbandry campus owned by the University of Evora in northern Portugal.
The system will be used to maximise the efficiency of a 6.6 kW PV array that has been installed on the roof of the hospital and, in the process, help to reduce energy costs. The system is capable of delivering a high quality domestic 2kW load for 2 to 3 days during periods of low solar output.
REDT was selected by the European Commission to build and supply the system for the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
The objectives of the FP7 project are to develop improved methodology, management, efficiency and cost reduction for renewable energy generated from solar PV installations. REDT is working collaboratively with 11 other academic and industry partners from across Europe.
This project offers REDT an excellent opportunity to prove its Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) systems in conjunction with the most influential organisations in the European PV industry, and the potential for additional sales volume in this sector throughout Europe with the same partners.
The REDT VRFB system was specially designed to work with a Photovoltaic installation;
- Its very long lifespan (20 years) matches the life of the PV modules
- It can accept a very large depth of discharge (up to 95%), allowing to remediate the fluctuations of solar power
- It is environmentally friendly as it is safe, non-flammable, non-explosive and the fluid used is fully recyclable as it does not degrade over the term of its use
PV-CROPS is a research project which aims to;
- Improve the reliability, performance and lifetime of PV systems , working towards a 9% increase in the performance ratio
- Reduce their costs by up to 30%
- Enhance integration into the electrical grid by 30%
